Power to the Motherland

March 8, 2018

In the African-American community, one of the ways in which black people choose to actively pay homage to Africa, as the Motherland, is through their choice of clothing, hairstyles, and accessories. The political statement serves as an acknowledgment to their original roots, post-slavery, as well as Africa’s rich culture and history.

This same political ideology inspired the creation of this photo series, “Power to the Motherland.” Through the physical appearances of the models, I continue the homage to Africa, visually, as well as debunking the stereotypes that surround Africa, that was created by the western world.

I hope this series reminds black people, everywhere, that they should never forget where they came from because there are so much beauty and strength within it.
